If you are working out where to host an MCP server, the Model Context Protocol makes the answer unusually clear. A local server talks over stdio and never leaves your laptop. A remote one is a long-lived HTTP service that streams, holds tokens, and needs an address that stays put. Three of those four things are decided by your host rather than by your code.
The specification describes a remote MCP server as an independent process handling multiple client connections, which is an ordinary long-lived daemon. That is the first thing shared hosting cannot give you, because PHP hosting starts a process per request and reaps whatever is left behind. A VPS gives you systemd, your own runtime and the root access to install it: Node, Python, Go, or .NET on Windows Server, whichever SDK your server is written against.
A reply is either a single JSON object or a Server-Sent Events stream scoped to that request, and a subscriptions/listen call returns a stream that stays open. The spec asks servers to send X-Accel-Buffering: no, because without it proxies "may accumulate messages before sending them to the client". It also suggests periodic keep-alive comments so an intermediary does not close a quiet connection. Both of those are reverse-proxy settings, and you can only change them when the reverse proxy is yours. This is the clearest single reason a remote MCP server belongs on a VPS.
A protected MCP server acts as an OAuth 2.1 resource server. It has to validate that an access token was issued for it specifically, and it must not accept or pass on any other token. It also has to check the Origin header on every connection to shut down DNS rebinding. Ours holds mailbox credentials. Root access, firewall rules you write yourself, a certificate you control and nobody else on the filesystem is the right shape for that job.
The server exposes a single endpoint, something like https://mcp.example.com/mcp, and that canonical URI is what an access token gets bound to. So it needs a public IP that does not move, a domain you control and a certificate you renew. One more thing worth knowing: the 2026-07-28 revision dropped resumable streams, so a dropped connection means the client starts the request again. Connection stability earns its keep.

Less than you might think, and the protocol is not the reason. MCP is JSON-RPC over HTTP and costs almost nothing to speak. What you are sizing for is whatever your server does once a tool gets called.
Most published MCP servers are this shape. One spends its life waiting on somebody else’s HTTP response, so the cores sit idle and 1 to 2 GB of RAM covers it. The 1 Core plan self-hosts an MCP server of this kind without complaint.

Yes, and it is one of the better things to put on one. A remote MCP server is a long-running HTTP service, so it needs a machine where you can keep your own process alive, which rules out shared hosting. Full root access lets you install whatever runtime your server is written in, run it under systemd, and configure your own reverse proxy. That last part matters more than it sounds: the Model Context Protocol streams replies over Server-Sent Events, and the spec asks servers to disable proxy buffering and send periodic keep-alives so an idle stream is not closed. Those are nginx settings, and on a VPS the nginx is yours.

A server that wraps someone else’s API spends its life waiting on I/O and is comfortable on 1 to 2 cores with 1 to 2 GB of RAM. Six cores and up is for anything holding an index or a model in memory, like local vector search or document processing.
